Improvisation, or improv, is a form of live theatre in which the plot, characters and dialogue of a game, scene or story are made up in the moment. Most often improvisers will take a suggestion from the audience, or draw on some other source of inspiration to get started.

Improv is unique in that if you see a performance, that’s it… there will never be another show exactly like it ever done again. Improv is different every time.

Positively Funny Improv’s shows take place on Thursdays in the Broadway Room at The StarDome.  If you have seen the famed “Whose Line Is It Anyways?!”, then you have sense of what takes place when the comedic actors from PFI take to the stage each week. The audience is in control of the creation of the show.  From their suggestions, the show is born.

The StarDome is primarily known for its stand-up comedy. Improv and stand-up comedy are different entertainment experiences that give you the same result in (hopefully) laughing out loud. Here are the two main differences:

  1. In stand-up, there’s one person on a stage with a microphone. In improv, there’s a team of people performing together.
  2. In stand-up, the material is written and rehearsed ahead of time. In improv, there might be a general structure to the show, but all of the material is made up on the spot.

Any description you find online explaining the differences will state it as improv going with whatever happens and standup going with a set script. Improv usually has to work as a group effort, while standup is something that’s much more from the thoughts of one person. And when you see these two worlds collide on one stage, it almost always creates interesting situations.

PFI partnered with The StarDome in 2016 to bring this alternative style of comedy to the Broadway Room located inside The StarDome facility.  Audiences love this affordable comedy alternative and have shown their love by returning time and time again to see the show.  The PFI Improv show also offers a "clean comedy" alternative that is rated PG-13 so it is ideal for a family out.  Just because it is labeled "clean comedy" doesn't mean it is not edgy comedy.  We call it "comedy with attitude."  A PFI audience will often have children as young as 13 laughing in the aisles.

The Improv comedy show is an ideal group experience, especially if you are celebrating a special occasion!  If PFI knows ahead of time, they will craft a unique, personalized experience for your special guest.  PFI often hosts special events from bachelorette parties to anniversary parties to birthday celebrations.  The special night is long remembered!  There is even video for your group.

The PFI show has also been tagged as a “Great First Date” experience by numerous local blog sites, including the well-known blog Style Blueprint.

Improv is spontaneous, entertaining, and fun. But like all great things, you’ll have to see it first hand to fully experience and appreciate it.  Tickets are only $9.  The full StarDome menu for food and drinks is offered during the Improv comedy show.  You can get your tickets by going to or calling 205.444.0008.  Limited tickets are available at the door.
