To “Saturday Night Live” fans, Darrell Hammond isn’t just one person, he’s many.
During his 14 years as a regular on the show, he did impressions of more than 100 real-life personalities. The most memorable included Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Jesse Jackson, Chris Matthews, Regis Philbin, Phil Donahue and a combative, clueless Sean Connery in a recurring “Celebrity Jeopardy!” sketch.
The actual number — 107 — was a record, in fact, until a few years ago, when Kenan Thompson surpassed it.
Audiences can expect to see Hammond do a substantial number of his celebrated impressions in his standup shows set for his show at The StarDome Comedy Club in Hoover.
The performances will also include “regular, slice-of-life topics,” he said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles, where it was raining so hard that Hammond interrupted himself to comment on the weather conditions. “It’s, like, gale-force winds. It’s raining sideways,” he said, before returning to the subject of his standup act.
“What I really do is tell stories,” he said, “and part of my story is that, as a young person I started doing impressions and talking like other people, and ended up making a living doing that on ‘Saturday Night Live.’
“So I want to be sure to fit in all the ‘SNL’ stuff, because that’s pretty much why people are coming to see me.”
