Since 1983, Alabama's StarDome has been bringing big laughs to local patrons from all walks of life. Of course, it hasn't always been perfect, and it hasn't always been "The StarDome." In fact, there's quite a colorful history that lies behind the nation's premier comedy club.
Simple Beginnings and Sudden Tragedy
In its first incarnation, the club was known simply as "The Comedy Club." Initially located on Highway 31, The Comedy Club was home to a mere 200 seats. In those days, names like Sinbad, James Gregory and Tim Allen were small-fries, testing the waters of stand-up comedy in front of small Birmingham audiences.
Two years after its opening, The Comedy Club would move to Green Springs Highway, this time to a larger building on Green Springs Highway with an increased capacity of 300 seats. The club continued to play host to dozens of up-and-coming comedy stars until March of 1993, when an intense blizzard struck, causing complications that led to a fire that burned The Comedy Club to the ground.
A Fresh Start Leads to Big Success
Not willing to call it quits, owner and general manager Bruce Ayers managed to successfully reopen the club in October of 1993, only 7 months after it had been destroyed. This time, the club was known as The Comedy Club StarDome and boasted the most ambitious set of features yet: 420 seats, full banquet facilites, a Las Vegas-style showroom and VIP Skybox seating. Ayers' tenacity and new club did not go unnoticed. That year, Bruce Ayers was named Birmingham's "Small Businessman of the Year" and The Comedy Club StarDome skyrocketed to the very top of the country's comedy club roster.
A Full-Building Facelift
Twenty-two years later, in 2016, The StarDome would undergo an extreme renovation process, reworking almost every aspect of the building. The spacious Main Showroom was completely re-designed and now features a convenient stadium seating arrangement that gives every patron the best possible view of the stage. Stages and event spaces have been outfitted with the latest in lighting, sound and A/V systems for top-quality production value, and an entirely new bar — the Star Bar —has been added for post-show mingling, cocktail parties, meet-ups with comics and more.
An Ongoing Legacy of Laughter
Throughout its ups and downs over the last 20-plus years, the family-owned and operated StarDome has focused on one thing: bringing the absolute best stand-up and improv comedy to the Birmingham, Alabama area. With two full-service bars, a full-service kitchen and four unique rentable spaces, The StarDome is also ideal for private parties and corporate events.
